Western Chances | Scholarships

Jack is from the south of Sudan. He was orphaned as a young boy and lived in a refugee camp in Kenya for ten years. He only had very few years of primary education on arrival in Australia in 2003. Since then he has undertaken intensive numeracy and literacy and has already gained some VCE units. Jack lives independently in public housing. He hopes to complete his VCE and go to university.

Western Chances aims to ensure he goes to univesity by supporting him with a computer, internet connection and money for his VCE texts.


Grace is a high achiever in all her school subjects. She lives in public housing with her mother and younger brother with no contact or support from her father. Three years ago her mother suffered a stroke and now is unable to work. Grace provides a lot of the care for both her mum and brother. She copes with this adversity very well and optimistically.

Western Chances was able to provide Grace with a computer and internet connection, desk and chair and money for her schooling and this will give her a good chance of succeeding with her special talents.


Jason is a Year 7 student who is an avid reader with a passion for learning. The family struggle financially. The scholarship will help Jason's parents cater for his ever increasing schooling needs.

His Western Chances Scholarship provided a computer, internet connection and $200 towards books to start his own library.


Natalie is an orphan. She lives with her sick and aging pensioner grandparents. Financial resources are very limited. The financial support offered by Western Chances has enabled Natalie to complete her VCE and she is now enrolled in a course in Child Care Studies.

Western Chances supports Natalie with a travel card, union dues and texts for university.


Peter is a multi-talented, multi-skilled, very positive young man in Year 10 at school. He is an outstanding student who displays initiative and problem solving skills in all his work. He has what is called "get up and go". He is easy to talk to, has a bright personality and continually strives to create further opportunities for himself. He is a leader within the school community and is well respected by his peers and adults.

Peter has the ability to sustain his commitment to projects and he is still working at his commitment when other people drop off. Peter shows a passion for reading and has an inordinate talent in the engineering, graphic design and architectural areas. One of his teachers suggested that he might be one of our future leaders in the environmental area designing products to solve the problems of the future. He has already had some of his work exhibited.

The scholarship will help the family to financially support Peter's talent and passion.


His Western Chances Scholarship provided him with a computer for graphic design and $515 for graphic design art supplies including coloured pencils.

Annette works to pay for her Year 12 studies. Annette is a quiet achiever who is prepared to help others. She demonstrates leadership in group work and is willing to share her knowledge. She has a genuine desire to succeed and help society by teaching children either at secondary or primary levels.

Annette has overcome family adversity to succeed in her scholastic pursuits. She is in Year 11 and of her own volition is also studying two Year 12 subjects, the only person at her school to do this. She loves studying history and biology. Annette grasps new concepts very quickly and her teachers all comment that she displays an outstanding work ethic.

Annette is a very successful and enthusiastic student. Her subjects this year are Psychology, English, (she is in the top 1% of the class), Literature, Biology, General Maths and two Year 12 subjects.


Her Western Chances Schoalrship has provided her with $500.00 for Year 12 subjects and a computer.


Bradley is a highly motivated VCE school leader who wishes to become a Member of Parliament. He demonstrates high level leadership and social skills regularly within the school community and is always organising events for the school through the school ‘Senate’. Bradley is widely recognised for his social concern by his peers and the staff.

Bradley possesses and inordinate amount of resilience and has survived and maintained a cheerful disposition through his life which has dealt him an extremely rough hand, some might describe it as devastating.

Bradley lives with his grandparents and has a part time job to help support himself at home and through his studies.

In the last weeks of 2004 Bradley was elected school captain by his peers.


His Western Chances scholarship has provided him with a computer, software, internet access and books for study.
