Skills Scholarship Award Ceremony 2011

Katherine Henderson (DEECD), Peter Garrett AM MP, and George Pappas (VU) with artist Dimitry

The celebration of achievement was the focus at Victoria University St Albans campus, on 9 August 2011when 58 young people received their Skills Scholarship certificates from the Hon Peter Garrett AM MP, Federal Minister for Education and Early Childhood Development, in an auditorium filled with families, teachers and friends. These talented young people were the newest recipients of the Western Chances Scholarship Program created to assist young people in the western suburbs of Melbourne achieve their dream of education that in turn provides them with a career goal.

The Mick Young Scholarship Trust partners with Western Chances to award Skills Scholarships to young people across Melbourne’s West studying VET/VCAL. This year 140 disadvantaged but talented young people have received a scholarship.

When Corey Beckers and Dimitry Schukin presented personal gifts to the guests of honour it again reflected the thought and creative flair of many of the Western Chances scholarship awardees. In both cases their work symbolised power, knowledge and education, reflecting the message in Minister Garrett's speech that knowledge and education create positive power. It was a message the Minister reinforced when he reflected on the Mick Young Scholarship Trust and the late Mick Young's own career path from shearer to one of the highest positions in Federal Government.
