“Western Chances is an uplifting organisation that gives assistance to students who otherwise may miss certain opportunities or struggle to achieve their goals.”

Western Chances’ alumna, Mimi, now works in her dream profession as a dentist. She recalls the barriers she overcame to fulfil her big dream.

“My parents were fortunate enough to be sponsored to move to Australia after living abroad in a refugee camp during the Vietnam war. I grew up in the western suburbs, attended the local primary and secondary school and completed my dentistry degree at The University of Melbourne.”

She describes two important elements to her Western Chances scholarship: “It was rewarding mentally to be recognised for my effort and achievements. The monetary aspect also made it less financially taxing on my family – especially when it came to equipment needed for my dental training.”

Mimi believes in the transformative power of education and the importance of a supportive community.

“Knowledge is power, and that means power to take control of your life and direct and shape it to how you want to live and who you want to be.”

Having experienced first-hand the encouragement of the Western Chances community, Mimi signed up as Western Chances Big Dreams monthly donor.

“The stories from recipients touch me as I can relate to some of them. They’re really positive and meaningful, and I feel like what I give can cause a ripple effect, not only to the recipient but to their families as well. A little kindness goes a long way and I hope my donation is doing that.”

She urges everyone to help create equal opportunities to education – whether as a donor or supporter on the sidelines.

“It is really important when you feel lost that you have a role model or have someone to guide and help you so you don’t lose sight or get side tracked from your goals. Running a marathon alone is really strenuous, having someone by your side to cheer you on helps you push toward the finish line.”
