Making the most of studying from home!

“Seeing beautiful roads and fresh air in a clean environment is something that most people take for granted. They won’t realise their beauty unless they come from a messed-up country.”

Yasin arrived in Australia from Afghanistan at the end of 2015. He is studying a Bachelor of Economics and Finance at RMIT University. “The first time we landed in Melbourne Airport and we were in a taxi coming home, I looked at the street and everything, especially the roads, looked so beautiful.”
He is committed to education, recognising that “studying is beautiful and gives everyone the wisdom and power they need in their life.”
This reminder keeps him focused through his studies. “One thing that helps me stay motivated is that many people don’t have the chance to get an education. Realising this makes me grateful for the education I am getting right now.”
As for tackling the challenging times during isolation, Yasin has picked up some hobbies to keep busy. “I have found some recipes and I cook those foods at home. These include making nice Italian pasta and slow cook (roasted) lamb and some middle eastern/Persian dishes. When we first came to Australia, I studied English as much as I could, due to the language barrier. I feel my English has become good enough, although I still have a lot to learn. During this lockdown, I have been reading books in Persian and Dari Languages and I am proud to say I can write and read in all three languages: English, Dari and Persian.”
Yasin is passionate about the network and support he has received from Western Chances. “Without their help and the great people who work there, I would not be able to get the education I am getting now. I have built a great network and met many amazing people who are now my friends. I really appreciate that.”
Western Chances has provided Yasin with opportunities for personal development. “I have been to a camp called Lord Somers Camp & Powerhouse. That was possible as I was sponsored by Western Chances and Anne Connors nominated me. Since then I have always been involved with Western Chances who do a great job of creating an inclusive community which aims to create an equal opportunity for everyone regardless of gender, background, and culture.”
Yasin has big dreams and determination for his future. “Although things are changing as time passes, when I am done with university, I would like to get a job in any financial company/banks or create my own company one day. One way or another I have zero doubt that when the time is right, I will make it.”
