Why I support Big Dreams

“Western Chances provides scholarships for a wide variety of talents, as well as providing young people with the confidence that they are worth an investment. Recipients’ lives are often not without difficulty… a scholarship can do wonders for one's self-confidence and future.”

Darryl first heard of Western Chances when he worked on Western Chances’ social media strategy. The more he learned about us, the more inspired he was by stories of our scholarship recipients.

“I met the passionate, hardworking team firsthand and it inspired me to support them into the future.”

Having learnt the ins and outs of Western Chances, he knew the impact being a Big Dreams donor would have on the long-term financial sustainability of our organisation. It made him want get involved and contribute to the opportunities and support of talented young people from Melbourne’s west.

“I’m lucky to mentor young people in my work. I can directly see what guidance can do to improve confidence and instil passion in one's vocation.”

Darryl’s been a monthly donor to Western Chances for the last five years. He’s a tech-savvy data analyst at Aesop, and Finance and Op Director at his side-hustle – an e-commerce kitchenware business. On weekends he’s cooking elaborate meals, and enjoys the company of friends with an interesting glass of wine in hand.

Darryl understands the importance of having someone believe in you. Having migrated from Indonesia to Australia when he was 10 years old, he still holds close to him supporters and mentors he met along the way.

“When I was younger, I had inspiring teachers who gave me their time and nudged me to try new things. I wouldn’t be who I am without them – personally or professionally.”

He hopes we can all keep contributing to a brighter and more equal future, and for us to be that one person who believes in someone when they need it most.

“Education is the key to social and economic mobility. It is in our best interests to advance a nation of clever, critical thinkers to solve the wicked problems that are present in our world.”
